Jim was first exposed to barbershop music in High School, where he sang with a quartet on the school variety show. But he did not join the Barbershop Harmony Society until moving to Vancouver in 1976. His moves took him to chapters in North Vancouver and Burnaby, B.C., Montreal,Peterborough, Midland, Toronto, and Barrie.
Having held various positions within the Barrie chapter, including Bulletin Editor, Treasurer, Music V/P, Chorus Director and President. Jim has served the Ontario District as Area Counselor, Division Music Educator and Division Coordinator. Jim was selected Barrie Chapter Barbershopper of the Year in 1981, and was named a Barbershopper of Renown (Ontario District) in 2004.
Although he played sousaphone in both the High School and Town (St. Mary’s) bands, and sang in glee clubs whenever he could, most of Jim’s musical training has come from the Barbershop Harmony Society. His first registered quartet was in Montreal. Further experience has been gleaned from quartet time spent with several quartets, which have been spawned from the ranks of the Barrie County Chordsmen. Those quartets include Kempenfeldt Chord Company, Nostalgia Express, Overture, True North, Just Imagine, Just 4 Now, Whirlwind and Acapella Unplugged.
